He was born in North Milford (now Orange) Connecticut where he was First Selectman, postmaster and storekeeper. He built the house now known as the Stone-Otis House restored and maintained by the Orange Historical Society. After his wife died he accompanied his son's family to Kansas. He was a part of the New Haven Group that settled in the Solomon River Valley. He homesteaded 160 acres along Twelve Mile Creek in the Solomon River Valley in Lincoln Township, Smith County, Kansas. He planned to give it to his son, Legrand, and return home. But he died before he could return to Connecticut. He was buried in the Twelvemile Cemetery, Smith County, KS. He also has a memorial monument in the Orange Center Cemetery, Orange, CT.
