She was always called Ellen. Born at Caplinger Mills, Cedar County, Missouri but moved to Iowa at a young age. Her father was a wheelwright and may have helped build the mill there. The family had to get out of town in the middle of the night because people who favored slavery were going to burn them out. Her brother Robert Burns served with General Sherman throughout the Civil War without injury. She worked her way through the Tabor Literary Institute in Tabor, Iowa graduating with honors. She and her husband homesteaded in the Oak Dale Community (near Downs) in Ross Township, Osborne County, Kansas, They raised a large family and celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary together at their retirement home in Downs, Kansas..
