Emily was born in Huntington (now Shelton), Connecticut and moved to Orange, CT after her marriage. They lived in the Stone-Otis house across the street from the Congregational Church. After her mother-in-law died she was the backbone of the extended Stone family that homesteaded in the Solomon River Valley on Twelve Mile Creek, Smith County, Kansas. She maintained two households (hers and her father-in-law's) long enough to qualify for 320 acres. While her husband roamed all over she kept two farms going with the help of her sons and daughters.
