Larkin enlisted as a Private in Company K, Martin's Regiment, Texas Cavalry (5th Partisan Rangers) at McKinney, Texas on July 5, 1862. He is listed on the last available muster roll dated January 1 – June 30, 1863 as "detailed to drive the Govt. team since Feb. 8, 63 by Maj. Cabel".
