She was born in Namioki Township (near East St. Louis). Her father is said to have owned most of what is now East St. Louis and let it go for taxes. Her parents died in a yellow fever epidemic and she was raised by her Uncle David and his wife. In later years she lived with her grandfather on the farm next to Uncle David. She met her husband when he was working on the railroad in the vicinity. They raised a large family in Illinois, Iowa and Oregon. She died the day before Armistice Day while visiting her oldest daughter in Kansas.
