He landed at New York and went to Philadelphia where he lived briefly at Camden, New Jersey where he had relatives. He lived one or two years at Decatur, Illinois. He farmed with brother Samuel, in Western Township, near Crampton, Illinois until 1862. Then he came to Alba Township, Henry County, Illinois. James was working on the railroad when he met, and fell in love "at first sight" with his future wife. He married, in 1864, Margaret Malinda Rankin (daughter of Amos Balch Rankin and Eliza Thompson). J. J. lived for 16 years in the Alba Township, Henry County, Illinois; 13 years in Washington Township, Jasper County, Iowa; 8 or 9 years at College Springs, Page County, Iowa; and the rest of his life at near Eugene, Oregon. He farmed near Blatchly, Oregon. Many of his descendants live near Eugene, Oregon
