Altoona

Gerald D. Collins, of Altoona, passed away peacefully, with family by his side on Wednesday, December 16, at Bright Kavanagh Hospice House.

Jerry was born October 21, 1931 in Mineral Point, Wisconsin, to Clifford and Anna (Schweitzer) Collins. He was one of four children. He joined the Navy in 1951, and served during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Oriskany. After his discharge from the Navy he resided in Rockford, Illinois. He was part owner and operator of Meadow Mart Magnavox. When the business closed he took a position traveling for North American Philips and moved to Iowa. He was a born salesman and worked in sales until his retirement in 2004.

Jerry was united in marriage to Sharon, the love of his life, in Roscoe, Illinois on December 23, 1972. Left to cherish memories along with his wife are two daughters Cathy (Gary) Gardner of Belleville, IL, Diane Collins of Rockford, IL. In addition two stepchildren Michael (Marjorie) Morrison of Des Moines, IA and Kimberly (Danny) Hardman of Pleasant Hills, IA, seven grandchildren, two great granddaughters and one brother Kenneth (Delores) Collins and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, and brother.

He was an avid boater, taking such pride in his boat. He enjoyed many years of camping, boating and water skiing on various lakes with family and friends. Other interest were golfing, traveling, and he was an avid fan of NASCAR racing.

A celebration of his life, at which time the family will receive guests, will be held at Woodland Hills Christian Church, 2484 SE 68th St., Pleasant Hill, IA, of which he was a member, from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, December 18, 2009. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Woodland Hills Christian Church. Due to military constraints burial will be 11 a.m., Monday, December 21, 2009 at the Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.

Jerry was a blessing to family and friends. One of his proudest memories was winning the Des Moines Register ëNeighbor" award. He will be so greatly missed by family and friends.
