William Gillies was born in Mount Calvary, Wisconsin on June 17, 1878, the son of Nicholas and Mary Gillies. As a small boy he moved to New Haven.
In 1901 he married Rose Cheney who was born October 21, 1888, in the community of Stillwater, southeast of New Haven. They lived all of their married life at the same place in New Haven with the exception of five years and lived Cheney farm south of New Haven. Their marriage lasted for 67 years.
Willie died on October 17, 1968, at the age of 90. Rose died on November 25, 1974, at the age of 94.
One daughter was born to them, Rosemary (Mrs. Daniel McCarthy), three granddaughters and one great-grandson.
