MALIBU, Calif. - Charles Everett "Charlie" Hays, 12, passed away at his home overlooking the ocean on Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997.

Memorial service: 5 p.m. Saturday at the Michael Landon Community Center at Bluffs Park in Malibu. Funeral was Feb. 4 at Sandy Crescent Stake Center in Sandy, Utah. Burial: Charlie was laid to rest in Larkin Sunset Gardens in Sandy.

Memorials: Faces of Courage - a Charlie Hays foundation - Box 3, Malibu, Calif. 90265.

Although only 12 years old, Charlie knew more of and taught more people about life than many who live an entire lifetime.

Charlie was born in Santa Ana, Calif., later moving to Arlington, Texas, and then Park City, Utah, where he loved to snow-ski and play baseball. Diagnosed with a rare form of thyroid cancer over five years ago, Charlie endured patiently and courageously.

Because of Charlie's drive to help other children, he inspired the formation of the Faces of Courage Foundation - a foundation that helps families with terminally ill children better heal their wounded hearts through video memories. Charlie was responsible for Dr. Ruth Decker's (of St. Louis) discovery of a genetic link in medullary thyroid cancer. Lives are now being saved.

Survivors: His mother, Susan Addington, and his father, Jeff Hays; brothers, Perry Dodson and Brandon, Michael and Jared Hays; sister, Kacey Hays; and best friends Chad Rinderknecht, David Sulsh and Cameron Carr. Also surviving are Ray Frederick, Mark Dodson and Ken Stanton; grandparents, Judy and Clayton Hassell (currently serving a mission to the Philippines for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), Neil and Shirley Dodson and Curtis and Ann Hays; and great-grandparents, Erna and Everett Murphy.
