Duncan Greenberry Carmichael was born 16 Dec 1816 in Baldwin County, Georgia the son of Duncan and Jane (Wilcher) Carmichael.

His marriage to Winnie Johnson about 1838 produced three children: John Wilcher, Mary J., and Duncan Carroll.

He married Sophronia Vastine Leaptrot (or Liptrot) 14 Oct 1847. To this union nine children were born:

Elizabeth Catherine Carmichael Mercer (1849-1924)
William Jasper Carmichael (1853-1915)
Louisa Rebecca Carmichael Smith Mercer (1855-1931)
Julia Sophronia Carmichael Sandford (1858-1924)
Hiram Jordan Tobias Carmichael (1861-1944)
Jackson Morgan Carmichael (1865-1948)
Martha Carmichael Mims (1867-1947)
Mary Jane Carmichael Mims (1867-?
Charles Gray Carmichael (1871-1940)
