Christopher S. Gaines, 38, Kokomo, died at 9:25 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at his home. He was born Nov. 4, 1971, in Kokomo, the son of Michael E. and Gloria J. (Franklin) Gaines, who survive. He was married in Kokomo on Aug. 8, 1998, to Tonia J. Sargent, and she survives.

Chris was a 1990 graduate of Northwestern High School, where he was the recipient of the Blanket Athletic Award for excelling in wrestling, track and cross-country. He attended IUK and Ivy Tech, Kokomo, majoring in mechanical engineering. He was employed at Chrysler Indiana Transmission Plant I, where he was a member of the UAW Local 685.

He had been baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick Catholic Church and attended Morning Star Church with his family. He enjoyed road racing and watching NASCAR. He was an avid sports enthusiast and spent countless hours watching and videotaping his daughters' gymnastic competitions.

Survivors include his wife and parents of Kokomo; two daughters, Megan M. Gaines and Ashley N. Gaines, both at home; two brothers, Brian M. Gaines, Indianapolis, and Matthew A. Gaines and his wife, Lauren, Kokomo; one nephew, Logan Sargent; one niece, Marissa Gaines; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Larry and Andrea Sargent, Kokomo; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Carl and Amy Sargent, Sharpsville; grandparents, several aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, Lincoln Road Chapel, with Rev. Fr. Theodore Dudzinski, pastor of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Rev. Greg Reed, pastor of Morning Star Church, officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.. Memorial contributions may be made to an education fund established at Solidarity Credit Union for the benefit of his daughters, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
