Mary Ann Howe was born in Erie Pennsylvania, the daughter of Samuel C. Howe, a farmer, and Elizabeth (Mumford) Howe, in 1833.

She had a younger brother, William, and two younger sisters, Lydia and Sarah. After her sister Sarah was born in 1842, they moved to Cotton Township in Switzerland County, Indiana, and lived there for several years.

On November 26, 1856, Mary Ann married Crawford Dobson in Champaign Illinois, where they had two children, Violet Amanda, born in 1857, and John Franklin, born in 1859.
Their family then moved to Guthrie County Iowa, where they had another son, William Albert, who was born in 1861.

Mary Ann and Crawford Dobson lived the next 45 years in Guthrie County Iowa as pioneer farmers, while raising their three children, who all went on to have families of their own.

They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on November 26, 1907, as well as one more year together, before Mary Ann died April 17, 1909 in Guthrie Center, Guthrie County, Iowa.
