Chris's father Bill emigrated to the U.S. from Leeuwarden, Friesland, Netherlands at the age of 8 (1907) with his parents (Johannes "John" van der Molen and Margareta Christina Grevenstuk), and they settled initially in Chicago.

Mary's parents (Floris "Frank" Boersma and Fritje "Frieda" Tiggelaar) were both born in the Netherlands, and emigrated to the U.S. where they met and were married in 1893. Chris was the oldest of four children. Her sisters were Frieda and Johanna, and a brother, Lawrence.

Chris married Nicholas "Nick" Daniel Scheffelaar (1910-1970) on February 22, 1938, in Allegan, Michigan. His parents were Govert Scheffelaar and Catharina "Katie" Maria Elisabeth Otto. Nick later used the last name to Scheffler. Govert and Katie emigrated with Nick to the U.S. in 1911 to Rochester, New York. Govert died in 1916 when he was kicked by a horse and developed peritonitis. Katie took a job as a housekeeper with a widower, Anne "Andrew" Klazes Leep, who had 8 children, in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, Canada. She married Andrew Leep in 1918.

Nick and Chris had three children during their marriage, Nicoholas Daniel Jr (1938-2008), Nancy, and Sandra. They lived most of their lives together in Plainwell, Michigan. Chris moved to Kalamazoo after her husband's death in 1970. In her later life, she often wintered in Phoenix, Arizona.

Chris worked in the food service industry all her life, starting as a cook working in sanitariums. Later she obtained a Registered Dietitian degree, and worked for UpJohn nursing homes in Kalamazoo, Michigan, for many years before retiring.
