Funeral obituary: Lydia Catherine Connely was born at Reeds Town, Wisconsin, on March 20, 1865, the daughter of James and Martha Connely. At the age of six, she moved with her parents to a homestead twelve miles south of Hastings, Nebraska. This trip was made by covered wagon. It was in this area that she received her early education, and when Hastings College first opened a few years later, she was among its first students. From 1885 - 87 She taught school in District # 35, Gosper County, Nebraska. She was the first teacher in this district, teaching and living in the homes of the boys and girls with whom she worked.
On July 27, 1887, she became the bride of Arthur M. Hill, in a ceremony performed at Hastings, Nebraska. The family moved to Littleton (Colorado) in 1899. Here Mr. Hill was engaged in farming until his death in 1923, Mrs. hill was known as a skilled seamstress. She was a member of Rebecca Lodge # 56 of Littleton and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She passed away on January 27, 1956, in a Denver hospital after a short illness. She is survived by her two children: James Maurice Hill of Littleton and Mrs. Pansy Spring of Bertrand, Nebraska. A brother, John Connely, of Littleton also survives. Two grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews also mourn her passing. [Transcribed by Mark D. Persons]
