Margaret Anderson was born April 1847 in Ohio. Her parents were Thomas Charles Anderson and Ann Prouse, probably both natives of Maryland, though Thomas may have been from Kentucky. Her parents were married in 1838 in Pickaway County, Ohio, and proceded to start a family which would eventually number 10 children, one of whom died in infancy.

The nine known children of the family were: John P. Anderson (1840-1861), Sarah Prouse (Anderson) Storks, George W. Anderson (born about 1845), Margaret (Anderson) Lett, Eliza Jane (Anderson) Hayden (1850-1909), William Anderson (born 1853), Martha Rebecca (Anderson) Wilson, Thomas "Lloyd" Anderson (born 1859), and Charles A. Anderson (born 1863).

The Andersons moved from Ohio to southeast Iowa in 1856. They settled in Des Moines County. It was there that Margaret was married to John A. Lett February 6, 1871.

John and Margaret lived in southwest Iowa during much of their married lives. Apparently they still did move around a bit, as a newspaper article from 1902 stated they had visited Louisa County, Iowa during the summer (southeast Iowa) and returned "to their home in Missouri."

Six of their children lived until adulthood, all born between 1873-1886, and three others are unaccounted for and presumed to have died as infants.

Margaret died in 1936, followed by her husband in 1939.
