Charles Edward "Ned" Berheide 83 of Richmond died Monday November 23, 2009 at his home after a short illness. He was born September 2, 1926 in Richmond to Frank and Eunice Hofheinz Berheide and lived in Richmond all his life.

Ned retired as a partner and funeral director at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church where he had served on the Advisory Board and as a reader and server.

He was a Third Degree member of Richmond Council #580 Knights of Columbus, a Fourth Degree member of the Gibault Assembly #238 Knights of Columbus, a life member of the Knights of St. John, a member of Harry Ray American Legion Post 65, BPOE Elks #649 where he was a past Exulted Ruler.

He served on the Civil Aeronautics Board of the City of Richmond, under the administration of Mayor Lester Meadows. He served as Chairman of the Richmond High School Band Uniform Committee from 1978 to 1979. He was a former member of the Richmond Jaycees. For 58 years he was a fan and supporter of Richmond High School athletics, especially the football and basketball teams. He was once made an honorary referee at a Richmond basketball game.

Ned was active in Richmond Civic Theater as a board member and volunteer. He appeared in 15 productions from 1951 to 1969. He won the Best Supporting Actor Award for his role as Ensign Polver in the production of Mr. Roberts, and as Hines in the production of The Pajama Game. He received the Best Actor Award for his role as Mr. Applegate in the production of Damn Yankees.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years Virginia, one son Bob (Kelly) Berheide of Elkhart, two stepsisters Betty Strzelecki of West Chester, Ohio and Joan Brandenberg of Richmond, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and step mother Helen Westendorf Berheide.

Liturgy of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Saturday November 28, 2009 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Todd Riebe officiating. Burial will be in St. Andrew's Cemetery, with military rites by the Wayne County Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may call 4-7 PM Friday at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home.
