Joseph F. "Grandpa Joe" Abner, 90. of Markle, died at 7:25 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 at the Markle Health Care Center.
He was born on Feb. 19, 1919 in Wayne County, Ky., to Luthur and Nettie (Morrow) Abner. He was united in marriage to Montez Robbins in Huntington on Sept. 24, 1946; she preceded him in death on July 11, 1999.
Mr. Abner had worked as a pipe fitter for the Norfolk/Southern Railroad. He also worked as a mechanic for Dreisbach Chevrolet in Dowagiac, Michigan. He later worked for over 20 years with the Markle Cabinet Factory. Following retirement he worked as a security guard for Majestic Corporation in Huntington. He played the guitar, bass guitar and sang vocals for several area bands throughout his life; including guest gigs with Loretta Lynn, Moe Bandy, Jack Greene, Tommy Cash and Crystal Gayle. He was a member of the Turnpointe Community Church and played bass in the Praise Band. He was a World War II veteran with the United States Army Air Force serving from 1943-1945.
Surviving relatives include one son, David (Susan) Abner of Decatur; two brothers: Lilbern Abner of Zanesville; Ray Abner of Ossian; one sister: Bonnie Heinrich of California; six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Mr. Abner was also preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte Hunsburger; three sisters, Bessie Henthorn, Mossie Crispin and Margie Monhollen; and one brother, Gene Abner.
Calling will be held on from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009 and from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Myers Funeral Home Markle Chapel, 415 N. Lee St., Markle, Indiana. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, 2009 with Pastor Kurt Church and Pastor Mike Shroyer officiating. Burial will be at the Horeb Cemetery in Uniondale.
