Mr. Godfrey enlisted in the Navy in 1942, and served in the Pacific theater as a lieutenant commander on the ship LST121.
After World War II he began his career as an insurance agent at the McIndoe Insurance Agency in Joplin. Eventually he became the owner of the agency and when he retired sold it to Scott Brothers, who had worked for him.
An active person all his life, he was the Joplin city tennis champion two years during the 1930s. He took up golf as a young man and continued to play until recently. He had played nearly all of the great courses in Scotland and played regularly at Twin Hills Country Club where he was both the oldest and the longest-standing member (58 years) at the time of his death.
Although he loved both the Navy and golf, most of all he loved his family and was a wonderful husband and father. He had high ethical standards, was generous to a fault and could always be counted on.
He will be greatly missed by all who loved him (especially his daughter's dog, Millie!).
