Clarinda was the daughter of George H. and Sarah Lavina (Higbee) Kelso of South Fayette Township, Allegheny County, PA. Her father died when she was a child, and her family moved in with her grandfather, Joseph Peter Higbee, in Pittsburgh.
Clarinda married Otto J. Gross, 10 Oct 1900, probably in Pittsburgh. Between 1905 and 1908, they moved to Lakewood, Ohio. They had four children:
(1) Marion Lavinia Gross (1902-1998) married Richard L. McNelly and lived in Lakewood
(2) Annetta Higbee Gross born 1905
(3) Frederick Kelso Gross (1908-1910)
(4) Margaret Abigail Gross born 1918
