Barry was born to the late Barry Fugh and Dorothy Gleaves Hawkins. He spent his childhood in Concord and graduated from Concord High School in 1964. He received a bachelor's degree in commerce and economics from the University of Virginia in 1968. After serving in Vietnam with the United States Army Corps of Engineers 20th, Engineer Brigade, he returned to the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business Administration and completed his MBA in 1972. He furthered his education at the Kenan-Flagler Graduate School's Young Executive Program at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1979.
He began his career in commercial real estate lending in Greenville, SC, with Liberty Life Insurance Company. Through the years he worked for Daniel Realty Corporation in Birmingham, Ala.and Citizen and Southern Mortgage Corporation in Charleston, SC. After working in both Charleston and Winston-Salem for Wachovia Bank, he retired in 2004.
Barry was an avid collector of both modern and antique fire arms. His joy for hunting began at an early age and continued throughout his life. He most enjoyed time spent at Cattle Creek, SC, hunting deer and dove with his closest friends. During his years in Charleston, Barry's fondest memories were of boating on the creeks and rivers exploring the low country.
Surviving Barry are his wife, Karen Brown Hawkins of 35 years; sons, Michael Corbett and Parker Davis Hawkins of the home in Summerfield, NC; brother Timothy Morton Hawkins and nephew Barry Gleaves Hawkins, both of Concord, NC; uncle, James R. Gleaves of Wytheville, Va.; and cousins, Luke Gleaves of Radford, Va., Lynn Gleaves Nelson of Lynchburg, Va. and Eric Gleaves of Bristol, Va.
