He cast his first vote for Andrew Jackson and served two terms as county commissioner. He came to Union County in 1859 from Ottawa.
He left three sons, John C. Lewis, postmaster, George Lewis, and Thomas Lewis of Ash Fork, Ariz; and two daughters, Charlotte Lewis, who lived with him, and Mary of Santa Anna, Calif.
