Resided Greater Part of Life in West Branch – Widow, Five Sons, Daughter Survive
Walter L, DOUGLAS, 70, of Galeton, R.D., died suddenly of a heart attack at 7:30pm, Thursday, November 16, 1944, as he was about to take the ferry at Morristown, NY, en route to Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada, where he was to meet his sister, Mrs. Jessie LACKEY, whom he had not seen in 35 years. Papers in his clothes indicated that he had been treated in a Syracuse, NY hospital the day before his death which was caused by coronary occlusion.
Although a native of Canada, Mr. Douglas had lived the greater part of his life in West Branch Township, Galeton, RD. In early life he was married to Miss Millie STEWART and to this union two sons were born. His second marriage was to Miss Theresa SCHANER, who survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife are five sons: Robert and Edmund, Galeton, R.D.; Victor, Coudersport, RD; Ralph, Ridgway; PFC. Gordon, of the US Army in France; and one daughter, Mrs. Wayne BURROUS, Galeton, RD; and two sisters Mrs. Mary BUDD and Mrs. Jessie LACKEY, both of Canada; also a number of grandchildren.
The body was brought to Galeton Sunday, and funeral services were held at 2:00 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, November 21, in the West Branch Community Church with the Rev. Glen Hamilton, pastor of the Ulysses Free Methodist Church officiating. Burial in the Germania Station Cemetery.
