He was born Nov. 11, 1943, in Scottsburg, the son of John Frank and Freda Smith Graves. He earned a master's degree from the University of Louisville, was a licensed clinical social worker and had a master's degree in psychiatric medicine. He worked as a social worker for both the state of Indiana and the state of Kentucky. He was a member of New Bethel Church in Lexington and a member of the Democratic Party.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia N. Livingston Graves; two daughters, Susanna Driggers of New Albany and Tracy Parker of Louisville, Ky.; two sons, Michael Graves of Jeffersonville and Gary Lee Graves Jr. of Floyds Knobs; two sisters, Kay Small of Underwood and Barbara Gotowka of Louisville, Ky.; one brother, John Graves of Lexington; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service was at New Bethel Church in Lexington. A private burial was in the New Bethel Cemetery in Lexington.
