Mr. James "Jim" E. Kerley, 67, died Tuesday morning, November 3, 2009, at Durham Regional Hospital, Durham, NC. Mr. Kerley was born in Barren Co., KY, the son of the late Margaret Nelle Branstetter Kerley and the late Edward Leroy Kerley, Jr.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force, in the 627th Military Airlift Support Squadron, serving during the Vietnam War. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Kerley was employed by Cavin's, Inc., now Milner Document Products, and currently by Clements Funeral Service, Inc. He was an active member of Temple Baptist Church, serving several terms on the Board of Deacons, of which he was a past chairman and was secretary of the Sunday School. Jim was a Lt in the Durham Police Reserves and served for several years. Mr. Kerley and his wife enjoyed genealogy and photography, which they used to photograph pictures of 32 complete cemeteries and make available on the internet at Cemetery Census.

Mr. Kerley is survived by his wife, Ellen Rita Foreman Kerley; daughter, Margaret Anne and husband, Rod Thomas, of Cary; sons, Brian Charles Kerley and friend, Kathryn Pecht of Virginia and Bruce Michael Kerley and wife, Sara, of Durham; five grandchildren; and his two Pekingese, Commodore and Lil'bit.

Funeral services will be held Thursday 11 a.m. at Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. Norman Harris officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Casket bearers will be Dr. Ron Spain, Ed Ball, Tom Falcon, Scott Bradley, Ken Foreman, Jr., Kevin Foreman and Jimmy Glenn. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Temple Baptist Church, 4504 Sterling Dr., Durham, NC 27712.

The family is being assisted in Durham by Clements Funeral Service, Inc.

Jim and Ellen were married December 24, 1965, while Jim was home on Christmas leave from the Air Force. In the late 1980's they were divorced. On February 14, 1990 they again married each other. The wedding was at the Avila Retreat Center on Mason Rd, Durham, NC. They were married by Edward Sarvis, Sr, a deacon in a non-denominational church and a Capt with the Durham Police Dept.
