In July 2010, Mattie's great-granddaughters, Barbara and Martha Roberts, shared memories of Mattie. She was a wonderful woman who cooked the best cobbler, chicken, biscuits, and other wonderful food on a big orange wood-burning stove. Her great-grandchildren loved to go to her 2-story home on the farm that she and her husband, Sam Stone, owned. The couple assured that all of their children learned to read and write. Mattie was a quiet lady who was very giving. She loved her family deeply and more than 135 years after her birth, her family still loves her just as deeply.
