George (Jorgen) Andersen was born in Saltum, Denmark. In the late 1800's, there was another George Anderso(e)n living on Washington Island, Wisconsin and it is assumed that this George Andersen used the last name of Saltum on the on the 1895 Census, his son Conrad’s birth in 1892, and daughter Christina’s marriage record in 1907 so as not to cause confusion between the two families. By the 1900 census he is back to using George (Jorgen) Andersen.

Geo. Anderson passed away last Sunday after a long illness from organic heart trouble. Mr. Anderson who was a native of Denmark has lived on the Island nearly thirty years.
He is survived by his wife and eight children, five sons and three daughters. The children are: Martin, Antone, Maurice, Christ, Conrad, Mrs. Aug. Koyen, Mrs. Steve Gunnlaugson and Mrs. Magnus Gunnlaugson. All live on the island with the exception of Christ who went to Camp Douglas as a volunteer from here. Conrad was drawn in the conscription.

Private Christian Anderson was called to his home on Washington Island the fore part of the week by the death of his father, George Anderson, aged 65 years, and for thirty-five years a resident of the island.
