SOUTH BEND - Phillip Oliver Bell, 22, was born in Alsfeld, Germany, on December 2, 1986, to Oliver John and Heidi Sunje Bell. Phillip's father was serving in the U.S. Army in Germany at the time. Phillip enjoyed sports, especially karate, when he was younger. Later he blossomed into a very good student and a very good athlete, excelling in football, basketball and track. Phillip attended elementary school in South Bend. He completed junior high school at Paragon Prep in Austin, Texas. He went on to attend St. Michael's Catholic Academy in Austin, Texas, for three years where he was a starting quarterback on the football team. He graduated from Westlake High School in Austin in 2005 where he played football and ran track. He attended college at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, and Indiana University/Purdue University in Indianapolis, Indiana. Last year he transferred to the University of Houston where he was majoring in Business and Communications. Phillip also enjoyed music - rap and reggae being his favorites - and aspired to a career in the industry.

He was visiting South Bend and preparing to sign up for military service when he passed away in an untimely manner. Phillip was called home on October 21, 2009.

Phillip is survived by his parents, Oliver and Sunje; his stepmother, Stacee Bell; and his siblings, Rayah, Jared, Alexandra, Michaela, Maiah, Liana, Annette, Derrick, Anakin, Rima and Siva. He is also survived by maternal uncles, Conan Mueller and Frederich Mueller and their families of Germany, and several paternal aunts, uncles and cousins.

A viewing and memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2009, in Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1050 Wilber, South Bend. The viewing will be from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. The memorial service will begin at 11. The funeral service will be in Austin, Texas, with interment at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Thallemer, Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 West Third Street, Mishawaka.
