Rena's maternal ancestry descends from Kidder Crandall and Polly (Stevens) Crandall (Maria's parents) who were native to New York, and then who resided in Ohio, Indiana, and Cass County, Michigan, where Rena's mother Maria was born as the youngest of seven children. This family descends from the volume entitled Elder John Crandall of Rhode Island and His Descendants, compiled by John Cortland Crandall and published in 1949, (University of Wisconsin at Madison). Of special note in this work, this family descends from Elder William Brewster of the Mayflower.
It is Rena's death certificate (Berrien County, Michigan) that provides the answer to a question about her mother, Polly "Maria" Crandall, who eventually divorces Marion L. Brant and marries Russell Clement. Her mother's headstone, also an interment in Pearl Cemetery, simply reads "Maria Clement," and Maria's parents are incorrectly stated on her death certificate from October 1911. A postcard between our ancestors noting the details of the services for their sister Maria (Crandall) Clement, postcards from "Maria Clement" writing to her siblings, and now Rena's death certificate stating her mother's maiden name was "Maria Crandall" are all pieces to a puzzle now solved.
Rena's Crandall family included her aunts Adaline (Crandall) Sheldon (1834-1924) and Emelia (Crandall) Johnson (1836-1897), whose children Frank Sheldon and Addie Vera Johnson married as first cousins. Our Sheldon family descends from these Crandall, Sheldon, and Johnson ancestors.
Thank you to William Brackett for first posting Rena's memorial and then transferring this memorial to the Crandall, Sheldon, Brant, and Hazard families.
