COATS BADLY HURT WITH HIS GUN BY NEGRO
Beat One Constable in Grave Condition; Several Suspects Arrested
Stewart Coats, 58, constable of Beat One is in Methodist hospital with slight chanec of recovery, according to his physician, from a bullet wound in the abdomen incurred it is believed in a scuffle with a negro or negroes on East Sixth street near New Orleans street, last night at 11 o'clock. Three negroes are in jail as suspects in the shooting.
Early this afternoon, Policeman D. E. Edwards said that since the blood transfusion, Mr. Coats appeared somewhat improved. He stated that his pulse,breathing and appearance seemed better and that he aroused while he was in the room for a brief time. Edwards said Mr. Coats recognized him and told him that he knew who shot him, but did not name the person.
Coats Is Semi - Conscious
Police and county officers said today they believe that a negro whom Coats was questioning in connection with some stolen groceries he was carrying in a sack did the shooting. Mr. Coats is in a semi - conscious condition and had not revived sufficiently to name the person who did the shooting.
