Joseph HANDGEN came to the US from Germany sometime between 1820 and 1848. His ancestry per internet:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I have corresponded with a person who has seen his records in the Munstermaifeld Cathedral.
His father, Joseph HA(E)NDGEN, was married to a Barbara DÜNCHEM of Lasserg/Wierschem. Their youngest son was Joseph Haendgen born in 1819. One of his god-parents was a Furhmanfrom Eltz.
Joseph and Mary Keller, both German immigrants, married in 1848 in Crawford County, came to Putnam County in Leipsic and had at least the following children: William, Owen, Harriet, Cora, Barbara Ruhamah and their youngest son, John Edward . Maria Keller Handgen died and Joseph remarried Elizabeth Donohue, and they had another 5-7 children, but by that time they had moved to the Adrian/Hillsdale area of Michigan. There are maps of the original farm area owned by Joseph Handgen. He had as many as 15 children.
Handgen in Germany is Haendgen and it is pronounced Hand - gen, with a hard "g". It is German with an umlaut over the A and that makes is Haendgen.
This information is not proved (unless cited) by seeing the original documents and should be used as "working data".
Joseph Hendgen (Haendgen/Hendges/Hentgen/Handgen/Hingen/Hamdgen/Hundgen), age 26 y, arrived in the United States on July 16, 1845 in New York from Antwerpen, with the ship Tremont. The ship came from the Mayen-Koblenz County and Cochem-Zell County, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. (Prussia) Most of the Germans on the ship were from the same area as Joseph Hendgen was and started their new lives in Ohio.
On this ship were also:
Anna Maria Hendgen, age 41 y.,
Anna Hendgen, age 21 y.,
Anton Hendgen, age 34 y.
It is said he came with his brother; other family was not mentioned on the ship manifest, but we have this info from another researcher:
Mathias Hendgen, brother of Joseph Hendgen married Anna Bast, daughter of Johann Heinrich Bast and Anna Maria Leim. She had 5 brothers and 1 sister.
Johann Bast is my great great grandfather.
Wilhelm Bast lived with his family in Ohio
Johann Joseph Bast lived with his family in Wisconsin.
Both left Germany in 1852.
Joseph HANDGEN born between 1819 and 1823, married in Richland County, Ohio May 23, 1848 to Mary Ann Keller, (some say she was also from Prussia; Census says Ohio); father Henry.
There are a great number of records with a Joseph Handgen (of assorted spellings) in Ohio who married Mary Ann/Anna and/or Emma Keller. Possibly with his thick German accent, his wife was Mary Ann Keller and he called her "Anna" which may have sounded like "Emma" to some disinterested clerk or census taker. Son William said she was born in PA. Son John said his mother was Emma Keller on his marriage license. On most census' she was Mary Ann.
Mary died and Joseph married Elizabeth Donohoe (hue) and they moved to Hillsdale, Michigan where they had several more daughters.
Joseph took his own life in 1894 at the age of 72. Seven of his children were still living at that time, but wife Elizabeth was gone by then.
Possible Descendants of Joseph Hendgen with Elizabeth Donahoe /Donohue
m. Elizabeth Donahoe March 16, 1861 (b. 1828, Ohio, d. 12 Dec 1878, Scipio Twp, Hillsdale,Michigan) Possible she was married before. She was 33. It did not say "Miss" on the record. If she had other children or another marriage is just conjecture.
1.Barbara Hendgen b. 1862, Ohio, d. 27 Aug 1884, Scipio, Hillsdale, Michigan m. Benj. A. Stoddard b. 1859, New York
2. John Edward Hendgen b. 1863, Ohio m. Alice Faith Hackett b. 1888, Michigan m. Eva A. Lewis b. 1863, Adrian, Mich. In 1880, a laborer living with Walter Slater and family in Adrian, MI, marriage: 15 Dec 1881 -Rollin, Lenawee, Michigan; in 1910, widower living with Wm Creps and family in Ohio ON JOHN'S MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE TO ALICE, IT SAYS HIS MOTHER WAS EMMA KELLER. (?!?) Now, the ONLY reason I can come up with for that oddity is...Elizabeth Donohue was Elizabeth Emma Keller, sister (or cousin) of Mary Anne and when she was widowed or divorced, married her equally lonely widower brother-in-law. Good grief. Grasping at straws here. Memorial ID 189787292
3.Rohama Hendgen b. 1864, Ohio
4.Cora Hendgen b. 1866, Ohio m.William B. Million b. 1861
5. Jemima Hendgen b. 1867, Putnam, Ohio, d. 1931, (Sunset View Cemetery,| Jonesville, Hillsdale, Michigan) m. George Shippy b. 1861, Fremont, Ohio, d. 1939, (Sunset View Cemetery,
| Jonesville, Hillsdale, Michigan)
6.Jeremah Hendgen b. 1868, Ohio
7.Lizzie Handgen b. @ 1871
You will note, with all the many children attributed to Joseph, none are named anything close to "Lizze", yet daughters "Lizzie" and Barbara (Stoddard) are buried with Joseph and Elizabeth in Mosherville Cemetery (MI). Lizzie died at age 9; Barbara at age 22. It is likely that little Lizzie would not have made the census, as she died in the spring of 1880, and would not have been in the 1880 census (nor the census of 1870, as she was not yet born).
On his death notice in the newspaper, it stated that he had 13 children. If that is true, we have two too many. When you have that many kids, I guess what's a couple more?
Following: possible other children:
Father: Johann Joseph Huendgen
Mother: Ann Maria Mueller
Son: Sebastian Huendgen
Daughter: Anna Sibilla Hubertina Huendgen b. 1840
Daughter: Anna Barbara Huendgen b. 1841
Daughter: Eva Hubertina Huendgen
Joseph HANDGEN born between 1819 and 1823, married in Richland County, Ohio May 23, 1848 to Mary Ann Keller, (some say she was also from Prussia; Census says Ohio); father Henry.
There are a great number of records with a Joseph Handgen (of assorted spellings) in Ohio who married Mary Ann/Anna and/or Emma Keller. Possibly with his thick German accent, his wife was Mary Ann Keller and he called her "Anna" which may have sounded like "Emma" to some disinterested clerk or census taker. Son William said she was born in PA. Son John said his mother was Emma Keller on his marriage license. On most census' she was Mary Ann.
Mary died and Joseph married Elizabeth Donohoe (hue) and they moved to Hillsdale, Michigan where they had several more daughters.
Joseph took his own life in 1894 at the age of 72. Seven of his children were still living at that time, but wife Elizabeth was gone by then.
Possible Descendants of Joseph Hendgen with Elizabeth Donahoe /Donohue
m. Elizabeth Donahoe March 16, 1861 (b. 1828, Ohio, d. 12 Dec 1878, Scipio Twp, Hillsdale,Michigan) Possible she was married before. She was 33. It did not say "Miss" on the record. If she had other children or another marriage is just conjecture.
1.Barbara Hendgen b. 1862, Ohio, d. 27 Aug 1884, Scipio, Hillsdale, Michigan m. Benj. A. Stoddard b. 1859, New York
2. John Edward Hendgen b. 1863, Ohio m. Alice Faith Hackett b. 1888, Michigan m. Eva A. Lewis b. 1863, Adrian, Mich. In 1880, a laborer living with Walter Slater and family in Adrian, MI, marriage: 15 Dec 1881 -Rollin, Lenawee, Michigan; in 1910, widower living with Wm Creps and family in Ohio ON JOHN'S MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE TO ALICE, IT SAYS HIS MOTHER WAS EMMA KELLER. (?!?) Now, the ONLY reason I can come up with for that oddity is...Elizabeth Donohue was Elizabeth Emma Keller, sister (or cousin) of Mary Anne and when she was widowed or divorced, married her equally lonely widower brother-in-law. Good grief. Grasping at straws here. Memorial ID 189787292
3.Rohama Hendgen b. 1864, Ohio
4.Cora Hendgen b. 1866, Ohio m.William B. Million b. 1861
5. Jemima Hendgen b. 1867, Putnam, Ohio, d. 1931, (Sunset View Cemetery,| Jonesville, Hillsdale, Michigan) m. George Shippy b. 1861, Fremont, Ohio, d. 1939, (Sunset View Cemetery,
| Jonesville, Hillsdale, Michigan)
6.Jeremah Hendgen b. 1868, Ohio
7.Lizzie Handgen b. @ 1871
You will note, with all the many children attributed to Joseph, none are named anything close to "Lizze", yet daughters "Lizzie" and Barbara (Stoddard) are buried with Joseph and Elizabeth in Mosherville Cemetery (MI). Lizzie died at age 9; Barbara at age 22. It is likely that little Lizzie would not have made the census, as she died in the spring of 1880, and would not have been in the 1880 census (nor the census of 1870, as she was not yet born).
On his death notice in the newspaper, it stated that he had 13 children. If that is true, we have two too many. When you have that many kids, I guess what's a couple more?
Following: possible other children:
Father: Johann Joseph Huendgen
Mother: Ann Maria Mueller
Son: Sebastian Huendgen
Daughter: Anna Sibilla Hubertina Huendgen b. 1840
Daughter: Anna Barbara Huendgen b. 1841
Daughter: Eva Hubertina Huendgen
