Henryville Soldier Is Killed in Viet
A 21 year old Henryville serviceman, Sgt. James Earl Lakins, was killed Saturday afternoon in South Vietnam when he tripped an enemy booby trap in Hue Province, the Defense Department announced.
Lakins was serving with the 101st Airborne Division, known as the "Screaming Eagles." and was on patrol when killed.
He was the foster son of Mr. & Mrs. Harold Wooldridge of Henryville. He graduated from Austin High School with the class of 1966. Later he attended Cumberland College for one and a half years before entering the service on June 19, 1968.
Upon entering the Army, he was sent to Ft. Knox, KY., where he took his basic training. He advanced to special training at Ft. Polk, La., Ft McClellan, Atlanta, and Ft. Benning, GA.
He would have been in Vietnam seven months as of Monday and would have celebrated his 22nd birthday on Jan. 27.
He is survived, in addition to his foster parents, by his
father, Lillard Lakins of Austin; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Haworth and Miss Karen Sue Lakins, both of Henryville; one brother, Stephen Lakins, of Austin; a foster brother, Michael Wooldridge of Henryville; grandmother, Mrs Mary Morrell, of Fort Wayne; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The date on which the body will be returned was not announced.
