In 1937, Harnish established a city record for triples with 768, bowled on the YMCA alleys. He had scores of 236, 245 and 278. In 32 years of bowling, Harnish had three other scores topping 700. He posted 727, 714 and 710. He competed in both National and State competition several times and in 1938 he finished 17th in the state tournament at York in which over 700 bowled. Born in Lancaster, he was a son of the late David J. and Elizabeth Weller Harnish and was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.
