CALEB W. WEST DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS
Former Territorial Governor Succumbs to Operation
OAKLAND, Jan. 21 . — Caleb W. West, former territorial governor of Utah and lately special agent for the treasury department at San Francisco, died shortly before 8 o'clock this evening at Providence hospital. He had been ill for several weeks, and was operated on for appendicitis not long ago. West was 66 years of age, a native of Kentucky. He enlisted in the Confederate army in the civil war and was in General John Morgan's famous corps of raiders. After the war he came west, and during the two administrations of Grover Cleveland was appointed twice to be territorial governor of Utah. He was a democrat in politics. While a resident of this state he became well known. He lived at the Athenian club.
