Sterling Ray Baty, 83, of Mtn. Grove, Missouri, departed this life on October 3, 2009 at his home.
He was born on March 20, 1926 near Bendavis, Missouri. Sterling lived with his grandparents until he was through the third grade at Alice School. He moved to the Manes community to live with his mother and stepfather and attended grade school at Manes and one year of high school in Mtn. Grove before he dropped out and started working at war time factories. On July 10, 1944 he was drafted into military service; he served for two years and two days before receiving his honorable discharge. He spent the next year attending Plato High School.
In August 1947 he enlisted into the Air Force where he spent the next 20-plus years. He served as a ball turret gunner on a B17 aircraft and later served as a radio operator and a Morse intercept operator supervisor. He served in Europe, Japan and Pakistan before retiring and receiving his honorable discharge in 1968. At that time he returned to a farm north of Mtn. Grove where he raised dairy heifers and beef cattle.
Sterling was united in marriage to Janace McDonald on February 19, 1972. He was a private person and a very dedicated, hard worker; he didn't quit until the job was finished. He was saved and baptized in 1995 and attended church as long as his health permitted.
Sterling was preceded in death by four brothers, Cicle Shelley, Wesley, Leonard Lee and Jimmy Rogers, and his grandparents, Calvin "Cal" and Lucinda "Cindy" Baty.
He leaves to mourn his passing his faithful companion, Janace of the home; his mother, Gladys Wade of Mtn. Grove; and a host of friends. He will be missed.
Graveside services were at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 7, 2009, at Hopewell Cemetery. Interment with military honors was under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool, Missouri.
