John McEwen was born in Ireland in May of 1795 and died on 17 Dec 1867 in Plumville, Indiana, County, Pennsylvania. During John's life he engaged in the mercantile business and was a member of the Pennsylvania State legislation 1843-44. When first elected in Oct 1842 John was listed at the "Federal Party" but when he ran for reelection in 1843 he was a "Harrison Democrat". Later he attended and spoke at a "Know Nothing" meeting in 1855 but renounced their anti-foreign, anti-Catholic views and presided that same year at an anti-Know Nothing meeting. In 1860 he was defeated as an independent candidate for the House. He was an elder of the Indiana U.P. Church and later of the Beracha U.P. Church, Plumville, 1860.
