On Sunday, September 27, 1884 Elder Patton preached his last sermon, and on the Tuesday following, he went to Chicago to have an operation performed for the removal of the cataract.
The operation was successfully performed on Saturday, October 4, but owing to some unforeseen complications, he failed to rally and on Friday, the 24th he passed away.
His wife accompanied him to Chicago and remained with him and when it was seen that the end drew near. His daughter, Mrs. V. B. Newman and her husband of Juda and his sons James A. of Juda and Daniel J. of Hampton, Iowa were summoned.
He was cared for at the Presbyterian Hospital adjoining Rush Medical School.
