Family mythology. 1) Came to America via Scotland or England, about 1843. 2) Came to the United States with a brother (Michael?) around 1843 from Ireland, County Carlow. This appears in a document titled "Ireland, Select Catholic Birth and Baptism Registers, 1763-1912." 3) Born in Germany, Prussia, Poland..take your pick. Being an Irish immigrant in the United States during John's life time was not a pleasant experience. That said, it is understandable why there are so many myths about John's heritage. Please note that several persons referred to a census record stating emphatically that John was born in Prussia. Prussia was a region and not a country. It was NOT what is known as Germany today. Historical regions of Prussia included parts of modern-day Germany, Russia, Poland, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Holland, Sweden and the Czech Republic, as well as other parts of some surrounding nations. Genetic DNA testing, paternal lineage, disputes any connection to what was once Prussia. DNA specifically pinpoints the Dagen line to England, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and Scotland. Census records are not necessarily accurate, depending upon who is reporting the information. Married to Catherine B. Becker (most likely Belgium, Netherlands or Norway) in 1849 in Muskegon County, Michigan. Three of the Dagen children, Catherine, Mary Louise and Peter, were baptized at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in downtown Muskegon. The records remain to this day and state the Netherlands as country of origin for both John and Catherine. Came to Cedar Creek Township, Muskegon County before 1850 and homesteaded there. Donated the lumber and helped erect the original St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Update: Baptism records have been found for John; Celtic, Irish Church Records. John was born and baptized in Tinryland, County Carlow, Ireland. I try to update information about John as often as I can, due to the fact there is so much misinformation about his heritage. Check back often, I typically post the latest Ancestry DNA ethnicity charts for my paternal side.
