Tom Carter was a rancher and collector. His estate sale lasted a few days.
Tom Carter's privately owned museum contained thousands of Indian artifacts, early- day farm equipment, pioneer cooking utensils and household items, fossils and rocks, and bones. After Tom Carter was severely beaten and robbed, he sold many of his treasures. Hunting arrowheads was one of Tom Carter's favorite passtimes.
Tom Carter was in the US Army Air Force during World War II--during which time he suffered "shellshock," which intermittently significantly impaired his functioning throughout his lifetime.
The last time I saw Tom Carter he was in the veteran's hospital in Waco. I took Mary Ruth to visit him. I have been haunted by his first words, "Please, don't hurt me, don't hurt me, please!"
