He was valedictorian of the Oceana High School Class of 1928, and was employed by Eastern Associated Coal Corp. as a foreman on the Kopperston Preparation Plant for over 35 years. He was a member of Toneda Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He loved reading and gardening, and he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Those preceding him in death in addition to his parents were six brothers and sisters, Myrlie Cook Rose, the Rev. Bruce Cook, Essie Cook, Alza Cook, Aud Cook and Athalene Cook Bailey; an infant son, Gerald; and a son-in-law, Larry Walker.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Auda Mae Brown Cook; a son, the Rev. Jerry Thomas Cook of Oceana; a daughter, Geraldine Cook Walker of Oceana; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Karen Cook Growe and her husband, Michael, of Pineville, Lela Dawn Walker of Oceana and Matthew Jackson Walker of Charleston; two great-grandchildren, Hannah Nicole Growe and Michael Eugene Growe Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Toneda Baptist Church with the Revs. Ron Harvey, Paul Holstein and Wiley Brooks officiating. Burial will follow in Cook Family Cemetery.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Evans Funeral Home, Oceana.
Pallbearers will be Raymond Walker, Daymon Brown, Roger Wayne McKinney, Kevin McKinney, Daniel McKinney and Michael Growe.
Honorary pallbearers will be Roger McKinney, the active and inactive Board of Deacons of Toneda Baptist Church and the Kopperston tipple crew who worked with Mr. Cook.
In lieu of flowers, people are asked to give to their church, the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
