RETIRED BURTON SUPERINTENDENT STEVENSON DIES

Sid Stevenson, retired superintendent of Burton Independent School District, rural minister and civic leader, died this morning at a local hospital.

Stevenson, 70, diagnosed only months earlier with cancer, will be buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. Services remained pending this morning at St. John's United Church of Christ in Burton, where the Rev. Glen Schoeneberg, St. John's pastor, and the Rev. Dr. Charles Babcock, Christian Church minister, would officiate.

He is survived by his wife Mary Ruth Weeren Stevenson, whom he married on June 8, 1948; son and daughter-in-law, Mark Weeren and Jackie Stevenson of San Angelo; daughters and sons-in-law Sydney Bess and Jack Robinson of Ector, Texas, and Patti Lynn and Jim Bob Lupton of Lubbock; brother and sister-in-law, retired Lt. Col. Leland L. and Thelma Stevenson of Austin; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Stevenson was born in Johnson City, Texas, where he attended public schools. He attended Blinn College and earned bachelors and masters degrees at Sam Houston State University.

A U.S. Marine during World War II from 1942 to 1946, Stevenson was a drill instructor in San Diego and a platoon leader overseas.

An active rural minister in the Christian Church for 42 years, Stevenson once told the Banner-Press that he chose education as a career because "you felt you are doing something for people - especially children."

He held teaching and administrative positions in Anahuac, Texas, at SHSU, Blinn College, and San Angelo Junior College, and he came to Burton ISD in 1970 from a position as dean of students at Angelo State University.

A "hands-on" superintendent, he physically involved himself in district projects ranging from budgeting to construction of a new outdoor basketball court to coming to the aid of drivers of broken down school buses.

"I would feel derelict if I just drew a check," he said. "A small school superintendent is in charge of everything."

His retirement from Burton ISD in June 1985 concluded 35 years as a Texas educator and education administrator.

Stevenson served on boards including that of Bohne Hospital of Brenham, Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative, and the Washington County Unit of Children with Learning Disabilities.

A prominent figure in Lions International, Stevenson was recipient of the Harry Reasonover Award in 1971, the highest honor given by Lions District 2S-3, and the Melvin Jones Award, the highest award in Lionism, in 1980. He held numerous cabinet level positions and served as longtime secretary to the Burton Lions Club, of which he was a charter member.

Also active in the Houston Chapter 8 Fourth Marine Division Association and the Burton American Legion, Stevenson spearheaded construction of the Burton Community Center for the American Legion, with assistance from the Burton Lions. One of his proudest moments this year came in May when the community center note was paid off.
