"Halifax County lost its Animal Control Officer on Sunday as Emmett Jerome Edmonds Sr. died at his home. Edmonds, who was 51 at the time of his death, had served the County as its Animal Control Officer since 1988 after first joining the department in 1977.

" 'The citizens of Halifax County will sorely miss him,' said Supevisors Chairman William Fitzgerald. 'He did a good job and was a hard working person who loved animals and really cared about them.'"

Obituary:

Mr. Emmett Jerome Edmonds Sr., 51, of Union Church Road, Halifax died Sunday, July 5, 2009 at his home. He was born in Halifax County on February 26, 1958, a son of Mrs. Vernell Martin Edmonds and the late Mr. Frank Frederick (Dick) Edmonds. He was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Lipford "Peaches" Edmonds, was a member of Blue Rock Holiness Church and employed by Halifax County Board of Supervisors as an Animal Control Investigator.

In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by two sons, Emmett J. Edmonds Jr. of Alexandria and Emmanuel "Jackpot" Edmonds of Richmond; three brothers, Lee Edmonds Sr. of Takoma Park, Md., Elder Branford Edmonds Sr. and James Edmonds, both of Halifax; nine sisters, Ether Ward, Evonne Edmonds, Hazel Edmonds and Lillie Hunt, all of Washington, DC, Cleo Easley of Halifax, Martha Sheppard of Ft. Washington, Md., Jean Coles of New Carrollton, Md., Mrs. Elaine Campbell and Eloise Swann, both of Danville; his father and mother-in-law, and Dexter and Florence Lipford; five sisters-in-law, six brothers-in-law, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Edmonds.

Funeral services will be held today at noon at First Baptist Church, Ferry Street with Elder Lawrence Campbell, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Edmonds family cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home. Memorials may be directed to Halifax Dixie Youth Association, 1243 Union Church Road, Halifax, VA 24558.
