Ornithologist.

He was the son of John Brewster, who was born in Wolfboro, New Hampshire. His mother was Rebecca Parker Noyes, who was born in East Bradford, Massachusetts. His father was a successful Boston banker. He married Caroline F. Kettell of Boston on February 9, 1878.

Brewster grew up in the Riedesel mansion in Cambridge. Baron Riedesel was quartered there after the surrender of Burgoyne. In 1887 the mansion was torn down and Brewster built an entirely new house on the site.

He attended the public schools in Cambridge. His sight was impaired sight which impacted his reading and study and as a result he decided not to pursue his studies at Harvard.

In 1862 began to learn how to stuff the birds that he and his friends hunted. He studied and collected birds. Brewster's collection became one of the largest private collections in the United States. He left his collection to the Museum of Comparative Zoology of Harvard University.

In 1869 he entered his father's banking business. His father hoped he would enter the firm as a partner and become the managing partner when he retired. However, Brewster decided the business was not for him.

In 1890 he bought Davis' Hill on the Concord which was covered with large pine trees to preserve the forest. He later acquired the adjoining Ball's Hill. He built log cabins on the river bank in which he and his friends could camp. He purchased the John Barnett farm and then the Ritchie Place, owning 300 acres of woodland, which he called October Farm.

For twenty years hunting was not allowed on October Farm. Brewster took daily walks and each evening made what he called bird notes.

From 1876 to 1900 he published in scientific journals. In 1873 he established the Nuttall Ornithological Club of which he was President for many years. The American Ornithologists Union was established in 1883 and Brewster was appointed to the committee to revise the classification and nomenclature of North American birds.

In 1895 he became President of the union and served until 1898. From 1880 to 1889 he was in charge of the bird and mammal collections at the Boston Society of Natural History.

He was one of the organizers of the Audubon Society. He later became one of the Directors of the National Association of Audubon Societies. He also served as the President of the Massachusetts Audubon Society.

He served on the advisory committee of the American Game Protective and Propagation Association, which was organized in 1911 until his death.

In recognition of his contributions Amherst awarded him the honor of A.M. in 1880 and Harvard an A.M. in 1889.
