Wife of William Milton Hubbard, whom she married on January 4, 1957, in Florence, South Carolina. It was the only state that would marry a 16 year old girl. She would be his wife for 29 years, they remained friends and neither one of them remarried.
When Mom met her Father and Mother-In-Law they thought she was too young to be getting married and at night they put a Roll-Away bed in their bedroom and she had to sleep in their bedroom with them.
Mary was pregnant Five times in her life. She had Two that lived. She said that Dad and her wanted to have Six children. She had RH Negative blood. Difficult to have children back then. Doctors told her in 1964 after she suffered a miscarriage, if she try again it would kill her. She stopped.

She lived in a few different places, Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming, Virginia, New Mexico and Colorado. Colorado was her favorite, she was a fan of the Denver Broncos and University of Nebraska Cornhuskers Big Red.
She had many hobbies, Antiques, Bowling, Going to Yard Sales, searching for the best deals, Reading, Sewing, Tanning, Traveling and finding the best Parking spaces, she was also the Coupon Queen, she never shopped without coupons. One time I saw her buy a $100.00 worth of Groceries and only pay $30.00 for it. Her Motto: "Why pay full price". She was a thrifty girl.
I think she was born to drive, heck she loved to drive, she used to Drag Race cars at the Richmond Dragway in Sandston, Virginia, she had Three Trophies on the Fireplace Mantel, and her's were bigger than her Husband who had Two. (plus Bowling trophies)
The First trophy she won was for the "Women's Powder Puff", B-Stock Eliminator, March 28, 1965, the car she raced was a Ford Galaxie.
One time she took the family car down the Drag Strip.
From 1980 to the end of her life Mary would own Three Chryslers, New Yorkers, Brown, Tan and Burgundy; Mercedes Benz, Black & Silver; and a Ford, Taurus, Red; all used of course. Her Tan Chrysler was stolen from the Parking lot of her Apartment Building. Was found a month later. Windows all smashed out and dents in it.
She hated to fly, which she did quite a bit of after 1968 (mostly on United), after the Railroads died, she used to travel on the Chesapeake and Ohio's "George Washington" train from Richmond, Virginia to Chicago, Illinois and then the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy "The Burlington" California "Zephyr" Vista Domes train to Fairmont, Nebraska, with her children.
She also enjoy traveling on Amtrak.
She was a wonderful Cook, she would make everything from scratch. She hated frozen food. She canned a lot of her food.
When it was Halloween she would never buy bagged candy, she would make something, like Cookies, Cupcakes and Candy Apples.
At Christmas time, oh the Candies, Cookies, Fudge, Popcorn Balls she would make it months ahead to give out Tin Can goodies to family, friends and neighbors. She loved the holidays and decorating the house in and out.
There nothing like going to Mom's for dinner, and the leftovers we get to take home.
Mary loved to eat seafood, especially Lobster, a passion her son does not share (can't stand seafood). She was always going out to Red Lobster and always with coupons. She enjoyed drinking "Root Beer" and "Cappuccinos".
Mary was very talented with a Sewing machine, there wasn't alot of money and her babies need clothes, so she learned to sew. She was so good at it she even made Wedding Dresses and Bridesmaids Dresses, she made her daughter's Wedding Gown. She also made beautiful dolls.
When her children were in school she decided to return to the work force. She chose driving a School bus. The students called her Mother Hubbard (not Old, Thank goodness). They liked her so much one year she had to trade bus routes because they all wanted her back.
She drove First for Huguenot Academy, Chesterfield County Public Schools, City of Richmond Public Schools, Virginia, Town of Malcolm, Nebraska and a Private Bus service in Denver, Colorado.
Years later, she drove tour buses in Denver and Central City for the Casinos. She was quite popular and was known as the Lady with the Dog. She always would take her dog to work with her. She was even written up in the newspaper about being a Trolley Bus driver in Boulder, Colorado.
In her life Mary had Two Collies Bootsie, Brownie; a Red Dashshund, Lady; Two Pomeranians Foxy, Logan; and her Yorkshire's Terrier, Munchkin.
Mary was a Civil War Buff, she could tell you just about anything about it, not so much the Battles, more about the people & places of that time. Her favorite movie is "Gone with the Wind".
She also loved Westerns. As a child she enjoyed listening to the "Lone Ranger" on the Radio on Sunday afternoons. She always told me she was born in the wrong time period. I can't imagine why, I love indoor plumbing. She once burned down the outhouse when she was living in Atlantic, Iowa.
She was at times very eccentric, I will never forget the day she decided to get a Tattoo at age 59. I was having a breakdown, you can't be serious. Later that day, she had a Tattoo of a Rose on her right foot.
Mary is also the one who got her son into Genealogy research, who got others interested in doing their genealogy.
Mary had more illness and surgeries (14 Major) than a person should have in a lifetime, we had seen her overcome incredible odds, her will to live was strong, she lost that battle on September 15th.
She will never be famous, all the years, people, and the children she met, she touched alot of lives, and that makes her a hero.
There was not enough time.

She was at times very eccentric, I will never forget the day she decided to get a Tattoo at age 59. I was having a breakdown, you can't be serious. Later that day, she had a Tattoo of a Rose on her right foot.
Mary is also the one who got her son into Genealogy research, who got others interested in doing their genealogy.
Mary had more illness and surgeries (14 Major) than a person should have in a lifetime, we had seen her overcome incredible odds, her will to live was strong, she lost that battle on September 15th.
She will never be famous, all the years, people, and the children she met, she touched alot of lives, and that makes her a hero.
There was not enough time.

Mary Ann Hubbard, passed away on September 15, 2009 after a long illness. Mary was born on November 15, 1940, in Humphrey, Nebraska, the daughter of Walter George Melcher and Martha Lily Zessin Wilson. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Barrett; son, William Peel; sons-in-law, Stanley Barrett and David Peel; grandson, Joseph Barrett. Mary was a retired tour bus driver in Colorado and a school bus driver in Virginia. A memorial service was held at Trevino Mortuary on Saturday, September 19, at 1 p.m. Interment at Crown Hill, Madison Neb.

Also survived by her Yorkshire Terrier "Munchkin", who now resides with her son, (Munchkin passed away Feb. 17, 2018 after a battle with cancer, we miss him).
Mary passed away at 5:50 p.m. at Boulder Community Hospital, Boulder, Colorado.
