Colonel (Ret.) Herman J. Miller, Jr. of Fayetteville, Georgia died September 9, 2009 at the age of 80. He was born November 1, 1928 in Calhoun, Georgia, the son of Herman and Janie Miller.
After graduating from North Georgia College as a Second Lieutenant, he briefly taught school and then began his 31 year career as a U.S.Army officer. He is a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
Following his retirement from the U.S. Army in 1979, he was a consultant with a Washington, D.C. company and then returned to Georgia as a tax agent with the IRS and the Georgia Department of Revenue. He was appointed Assistant Director of the Georgia Motor Vehicle Division in 1985 and served in that position until his retirement in 1993.
He was Post Commander of American Legion Post 105, a member of the Lions Club, a Mason, a Shriner, an Eagle Scout and an active member of Fayetteville First United Methodist Church.
He and his wife of 57 years, Thomasina Smith Miller, were the parents of two daughters and two sons. He is preceded in death by his son, James. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Doug Adams of Sudbury, Massachusetts and Kathleen and Bill Orr of St. Charles, Illinois; a son, Charles of Fayetteville; five granddaughters, two grandsons; one great-grandson; his sister, Juanita Fox of Calhoun, Georgia; sister-in-law Jacqueline Pope of Dalton, Georgia; three nieces; and five nephews.
The Funeral Service was held at the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church Chapel on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 11 AM with the Reverend Mark Westmoreland officiating followed by a graveside service for the family in Calhoun, Georgia. Visitation was at Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville, on Friday, September 11 from 5:00-7:00 PM.
