After graduation, Don and his mother farmed the home place until her death in 1934. He continued farming until his induction into the army in 1942. Don served his country for 3.5 years (413th AAA Gun Battalion), where he saw action in the European Theater. Following his discharge in 1944, he joined VFW Post #6242 in Beloit, KS. He resumed farming and was employed as a mechanic for the Heinen Implement Co. and Divel Harvesting Operations.
