After Jennie died, Alvin joined the army and served in France during World War I. Upon his return, he met and later married Lula May Simmons. Lula was previosuly married and had four children who were adopted out. Alvin and Lula had three children of their own, Alvin Henry, Jr.; Ira James; and Tressie May. Alvin and Lula divorced.
Alvin later married Margaret Ellen Doolin. They had two children, Charles Marshall Kissick and Nancy Louise Kissick.
