MICHAEL G. STEVENS, age 64, died at 12:15 a.m. Sunday, August 16, 2009, at Marion General Hospital, Marion.

He was born on December 9, 1944, in Marion, Indiana, the son of the late Bernard "Max" and Ada Lousie (Blackburn) Stevens. He married Jackie Young on June 23, 1962. She survives.

He was a 1962 graduate of Marion High School He was a US Navy veteran, serving during the Vietnam Conflict.

He worked for the Marion Police Department for 34 1/2 years, retiring in 2005. He was the Chief of Police from 2000 to 2004; Captain of Detectives; Firearm Instructor; a member of the SWAT team and Patrolman.

He was a member of the Samaritan Lodge #105, F&AM; the FOP; president of IPFTA; and a lifetime member of the American Legion and the NRA. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Mayor's Commission on Domestic Violence.

Survivors include: wife, Jackie Stevens of Marion, Indiana; three sons, Richard Stevens (Melissa Swackhammer) of Marion, Indiana, Ronald Stevens (D'Shea Faulk) of Sweetser, Indiana and Mike Stevens (Julia McClanahan) of Marion, Indiana; two daughters, Trish Richards (Troy) of Gas City, Indiana and Michele Adkins (John) of Middleburg, Florida; sister, Maxine Rayn of Marion, Indiana; 26 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; and his dogs, Max & Buck.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Linda Fitch.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 21, 2009, at Grace Community Church, 1810 E. Bradford Street, Marion with Reverend Dr. Thomas Mansbarger officiating.

Burial will be in Marion National Cemetery, Marion, Indiana.

Friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m., Thursday, August 20 at Grace Community Church. Masonic Services will be held at 7:30 p.m.
