Walter L. Simmons, 61 retired Conoco employee, died at 10:50 Sunday morning in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. He was a resident of 1813 El Camino.

Born July 16, 1923 near Shilder, he was the son of Thomas Jefferson and Luella Simmons. He graduated from high school in Yale, and later attended Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater and George Washington University in Washington, DC.

He served as secretary to Harold L. Ickes, Department of Interior Secretary during the Roosevelt and Truman administrations, and later worked for the Department of the Interior at Albuquerque, NM.

He went to work for Conoco at Lanee Creek, Wyo., in 1947 and had worked with the company all over the country before coming to Ponca City in 1960. At the time of his retirement he was a consultant in the computer department.

Simmon was a member of the Ponca City Country Club. He enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting and bowling as hobbies.

Surviving are his wife, Anna of the home; two sons, Carl T. Simmons of Newkirk, and Walter Frank Simmons of Blackwell; three brothers, John Simmons of Mannford, and Carl Simmons and Bob Simmons, both of Tulsa; a sister. Florence Fender of Marion, Kan., and four grandchildren. His parents and one brother preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First Presbyterian Church wit the Rev. L. Rus Howard, associate pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park under direction of E. M. Trout and Sons Funeral Directors.

The casket will ot be open at the funeral, but friends may call at the funeral home until noon Wednesday.

A memorial fund has ben established with the American Cancer Society, and contributions may be made in Simmons name through Jerry Corbin, Security Bank & Trust, P.O. Box 311, Ponca Cit, Ok 74602.

The family will be at the residence on El Camino.
