John Manroe Murrell was born in Dickson County, Tennessee, to Benjamin and Taphina Thedford Murrell. The date of his birth is recorded on a birth certificate as 1 Nov 1837, but other records indicate 30 Nove 1832. John was married to four wives and sired (23) twenty-three known children. He outlived a majority of offspring and three wives. His marriage to Wilmoth Harvey Matthews was on 10 May, 1891, in Denton, Texas. To this marriage four known children were born: Carroll, who is buried in the same cemetery as his parents; Walter Oscar; Ernest Hawkins and Mattie. John was a farmer by occupation, and had a homestead near Grapevine, Texas, where he built a large, two story home. The US Corps of Engineers built a dam and created Grapevine Lake, which inundated the homestead. Prior to that the family moved to Uvalde County where John resumed his farming. He served in the Tennessee military under Ross's Regiment during the Civil War, ending a rank of Captain.
