Abby Isabella never married. She was a school teacher in Santa Barbara for many years, and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church at the corner of Garden and Anapamu Streets. The "Childrens Window" was given in her memory by the congregation.
In 1878, Abbie was the Recording Secretary for the Santa Barbara Natural History Society.
On her mother's death, she was left the Bath Street house and its contents.
Abby went on a camping expedition in 1876 with four other young ladies. It was a daring thing for young ladies to do so in those days.

Santa Barbara Morning Press, 7 January, 1929
"Miss Abby Isabelle Hails, 76, fore-
most pioneer teacher of Santa Barbara
and one of the most prominent social
workers of the city died Wednesday
evening in her home, 223 West Islay.
As Miss Hails lived alone and was
without an attending physician at the
time of her death, a coroner's inquest
was held at 7:30 o'clock last evening
in the L.E. Gagnier funeral church
returning a verdict of apoplexy.
Miss Hails was one of the first
teachers to receive a life diploma in
the county and was the first teacher
to retire on pension.
In Early Eighties
She began her teaching in the early
eighties numbering among her pupils
the majority of the business men of
Estado who attended the Santa Bar-
bara public schools and their children,
and in several cases even grandchil-
dren. County Auditor Albert T. Eaves.
Mrs. Harry H. Harris, Mitchel A. Levy,
and Mrs. Mae D. Morton were among
whose who received part of their edu-
cation under Miss Hails.
Miss Hails was for years a member
of the faculty of the Washington
school.
Miss Hails was well known as a
Sunday school teacher of the Metho-
dist church. She has taught classes
since 1891 the average number each
Sunday being 50. During the past
few years she has been conducting
an interesting class for the older
members of the church, several of her
pupils being over 75 years of age.
During the influenza epidemic Miss
Hails was one of the first to organize
relief work in the city.
Funeral services will be held tomor-
row afternoon at the L.E. funeral church
with interment at Sta. Barbara ceme-
tery. Rev. Samuel Hughes officiating".
